With normal use as directed for one to two dogs, your scratching surface should last at least 6-9 months. TEACHING YOUR DOG TO USE THE SCRATCH BOARD

1. PLACE BOARD ON FLOOR

Wait until the dog sniffs the board. Reward. Do not use any verbal cues. Just wait. Reward each sniff. Eventually, the dog will keep sniffing to get a treat.

Once your dog is consistently sniffing the board, stop rewarding a sniff and wait until they paw it. Typically a dog gets frustrated that sniffing is no longer working and they start to paw at it.

2. MOVE THE BOARD TO AN ANGLE

Once your dog is consistently pawing at the board on the floor, lean the scratch board against your leg or a piece of furniture. We find the optimum angle to be between 45° and 90°. Ask for paw When they paw. Reward.

Repeat the procedure but ask for “other”, Dogs will favor one paw over the other. When they paw with their “other” paw. Reward. Continue this for short 2-3 minute sessions.

3. VERBAL AND TREAT REWARDS

Do this same procedure twice a day for a few minutes at a time. Your pooch will gradually understand that touching the board gets them a reward.

Once you teach your dog how to use it, several brief sessions a week will keep those front nails filed down.

Note: We recommend teaching with softer grit because less rumble will be less aversive while they learn. And then likely you’ll need coarse grit for the actual thing.

ANOTHER ALTERNATIVE TO NAIL BOARD TRAINING IS TO INCORPORATE FUN GAMES.

Place the board on the ground, sprinkle it with treats then cover it with a towel. Many dogs will dig through the towel to find the treats, filing their own nails in the process.

Toss a squeaky toy on the ground and place the board on top. Encourage interest from your dog by stepping on the board lightly to make the toy squeak. Often your dog will dig at the board to get to the toy, filing his nails in the process.

Place the board in a high-traffic area where your dog frequently walks, such as near the door to go outside. Walking over the board will naturally file the nails.

If you have a dog that frequently scratches to go outside, you can hang a small board on the door to encourage them to scratch the nail board instead.
